Michal Rynia was born on February 2, 1984, in Wroclaw, Poland. He began his career as a hip-hop dancer. Early on, he found great success in dance competitions, winning the Polish national championship several times and becoming a five-time world champion in hip hop. Additionally, he won the national championship in the Netherlands twice.
Working in Wroclaw at the Polish National Theater inspired him to pursue further professional dance education. He received an exceptional scholarship from the city of Wroclaw for studies abroad. He was the first hip-hop dancer to be accepted at CODARTS – Rotterdam Dance Academy, where he graduated in 2007.
After completing his studies at the academy, Michal began teaching at this prestigious institution as a guest teacher and choreographer. During his time in the Netherlands, he collaborated with numerous renowned choreographers, such as Ed Wubbe, Andre Gingras, Guy Weizman, and Roni Haver, and with companies like Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
His first solo project, Dream of Electric Sheep, was presented at the Royal Opera House in London and at the iTs festival in Amsterdam. Additionally, he created the duo Switched, performed at the Lucent Theater in collaboration with the Dutch Dance Theatre. He was supported by major production houses such as Korzo Theater Den Haag and Theater Lantaren Venster Rotterdam, which also produced his first shows Made in Rotterdam, Dust in the Wind, and The Myth.
His short miniature choreographies received performances at the gala finale of major international choreography competitions, including The Story We Tell and Switched at the Hannover International Choreography Competition, and Framed, Chained, and The Final Concert at the Belgrade Choreography Competition for Miniatures. His latest miniature, All Direction, won at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in New York, USA.
Since 2009, he has been living and working in Slovenia. Together with Nastja Bremec, he created the Slovenian-Polish duo MN Dance Company and developed their own unique style called Contemporary Fusion.
Irek Mukhamedovto invited Michal to choreograph for the Slovenian National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, and he has worked closely with the Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica as a movement director or choreographer.
As an artistic director and choreographer, Michal is primarily focused on creating full-length dance performances hosted by Slovenian and European theaters.
His recent projects DE-SET, Labyrinth, S/HE, Conspiracy of Silence, and Urban Tales have received outstanding reviews, and MN Dance Company is becoming increasingly sought-after by dancers and audiences worldwide.
Michal's participation in Roly Dance Open 2024 is a recognition for the event and an additional motivation for all dancers entering the world of competitive dance at the highest level.
